  • "An Evangelical Declaration Against Torture: Protecting Human Rights in an Age of Terror."

    This aspirational document calls for groups to recognize the common humanity and sanctity of life of each person.  Detainee human rights must be supported and any use of torture must be opposed.  Human rights are not a purely secular idea, but have been expressed in the Christian tradition for centuries.  

  • "Religious Leaders Urge U.S. to Ban Torture"

    The article spotlights an organization called the National Religious Campaign Against Torture.  Twenty-seven religious leaders have signed a statement urging the United States to abolish torture at U.S. detention centers.

  • Evangelicals for Human Rights

    EHR is a member of the Campaign to Ban Torture and signatory of the Declaration of Principles against Torture.  

  • Honor the Image: Stop Torture Now (A Jewish Campaign to End U.S.-Sponsored Torture)

    Rabbis for Human Rights North America leads a campaign lobbying the United States government to stop all forms of torture in areas under U.S. control

  • Joyce Dubensky and Rachel Lavery. "Torture: an Interreligious Debate." The Torture Debate in America. New York: Cambridge University Press, 2006.

    The authors focus on the exploitation of religious adherence as part of aggressive interrogation techniques.  They call for an interfaith dialogue and commitment from leaders of various religious traditions to unite against the use of torture.  

  • Sadiq Reza, "Torture and Islamic Law" (Chicago Journal of International Law)

    This article considers the relationship between Islamic law and the absence or practice torture in today's Muslim world.  Reza argues that the use of torture in a given Muslim-majority country correlates with the presence or absence of democratic government.

  • Sojourners: Christians for Justice and Peace

    Sojourners is a Christian movement promoting social justice all over the world.  Their work and publications focus on raising awareness and eradicating issues like poverty and torture
