    This 2007 PBS Frontline report investigates Vice President Dick Cheney’s true role in the Bush Presidency.  The documentaries show Cheney and his lawyers hard at work behind the scenes in the “War on Terror,” seeking to give the President unprecedented power.

  • "Mukasey Refuses to Call Waterboarding Torture"

    This 2007 NPR report focuses on the confirmation hearing of Attorney General nominee Michael Mukasey.  During questioning, Mukasey refused to say that water-boarding is torture and declined to reject the use of the method.

  • "Standard Operating Procedure" (2008)

    Errol Morris’ documentary examines the incidence of abuse and torture of suspected terrorists at the hands of U.S. forces at the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq

  • "Taxi to the Dark Side" (2008)

    This documentary investigates the torture practices of the United States in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Guantanamo Bay, focusing on an innocent taxi driver in Afghanistan who was tortured and killed in 2002. 

  • "The Torture Question"

    This PBS Frontline documentary from 2005 investigates the allegations of prisoner abuse at Abu Ghraib in Iraq, and mainly tries to trace responsibility up the U.S. chain of command

  • "Torture? Public Waterboard Demonstration in D.C."

    This Youtube video was shot outside the Justice Department as Iranian-American Mamoud Ebrahimzadeh was water-boarded in a graphic anti-torture demonstration to protest the nomination of Michael Mukasey as U.S. Attorney General

  • Alfred W. McCoy (2006), A Question of Torture: CIA Interrogation, from the Cold War to the War on Terror

    McCoy investigates the CIA’s practice of sensory deprivation and the effect of such practices on the victim.  He argues that psychological torture has become the primary tool in CIA prisons, but shows that information extracted by coercion is worthless

  • Arar Commission, Factual Inquiry

    Maher Arar lives in Canada, holding dual Syrian and Canadian citizenship. In 2002, he was detained in the U.S., deported to Syria, and tortured, in an apparent example of the United States policy of “extraordinary rendition.”

  • Jack Goldsmith. The Terror Presidency: Law and Judgment Inside the Bush Administration. New York: W.W. Norton, 2007

    Jack Goldsmith, who led the Office of Legal Counsel for nine months in 2003 and 2004, found troubling flaws in the legal framework governing the conduct of the military and intelligence agencies in the “War on Terror.” 

  • Jennifer K. Harbury (2005), Truth, Torture, and the American Way: The History and Consequences of U.S. Involvement in Torture

    This book investigates the CIA's involvement in torture since the 1970s and includes personal testimony from many of the victims.  Harbury provides arguments against the use of torture in any circumstances.

  • news briefs (audio): "Torture's Wider Use Brings New Concerns"

    This NPR report discusses the television series “24,” which features a protagonist who often utilizes torture during dramatic interrogations. Many human-rights organizations worry about the positive portrayal of torture in the mainstream media

  • OpenSource Audio: "Hillary on Ticking-Bomb Torture"

    Hillary Clinton explains to the New York Daily News editorial board and Mort Zuckerman that torture may be used in dire circumstances.
